  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 3/4 cup boiling milk
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup Dutch processed cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 8 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 200g dark chocolate
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Optional: 1-2 tbsp cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. Combine chopped medjool dates with boiling water in a mixing bowl; let sit for 10 minutes.
  2. Whisk together boiling milk, baking soda, unsalted butter, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and eggs in another bowl until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt; fold into wet ingredients until just combined.
  4. Stir in softened dates and soaking liquid until evenly mixed.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Pour batter into a greased baking dish and bake for about 25 minutes.
  6. For the sauce, melt unsalted butter with brown sugar, cream, milk, dark chocolate, and salt in a saucepan over medium heat until melted and smooth.
  7. Serve warm by pouring sauce over portions or directly onto the cake.
